Murchison Falls, is a breathtaking natural feature located in Uganda’s largest national park, the Murchison Falls National Park formerly known as Kabalega Falls National Park. The falls are a testament to the power and beauty of nature, where the Victoria Nile surges through a narrow cleft on the rift valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43metres below into the “Devil’s Cauldron”.

The falls were named by the British explorer, Sir Samuel Baker in 1864, in honor of Roderick Murchison, the then president of the Royal Geographical Society. The area surrounding the falls has a rich history, including a dramatic evacuation due to sleeping sickness spread by tsetse flies in the early 20th century.

Murchison Falls National Park spans over 3'893sqkm and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. It forms part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which includes the adjacent Bugungu and Karuma wildlife Reserves. The Park’s landscape is dotted with Savannah, riverine forest, and woodland, providing habitats for over 76 mammal species and 451 bird species. It’s a great destination to watch the African Big Five Members like African Elephants

Despite its natural beauty, the park faces challenges. The construction of the East African crude oil pipeline has raised concerns about the potential impact on the park’s ecosystem. Conservation efforts are on going to ensure that this natural treasure and its inhabitants are preserved for future generations.

For those looking to experience the majesty of Murchison falls, the park is open daily with various activities such as game drives, boat trips to the base of the falls, and hikes to the top of the falls offering visitors a chance to witness the raw power of the Nile up close.
